Distribution / Status (Tahoe):

Not established; first North American detection in 2024 (California Delta); 2025 interception at Tahoe boat inspection prevented introduction

Diagnostic Features

Golden to bronze color, glossy thin shell, anterior umbo, smooth surface, attachment via byssal threads (not cemented)

Commonly Confused Species

Western Pearlshell Mussel (Margantirera falcata); Zebra Mussel (Dreissena polymorpha); Quagga Mussel (Dreissena bugensis)

Shell Shape / Form

Triangular to elongated wedge shape; slightly curved dorsal margin; thin-shelled relative to Dreissenids

Shell Size

Up to 30 mm long; typically 15–25 mm in adults

Shell Thickness

Thin to moderately thin; fragile when compared with zebra/quagga mussels

Hinge Features

Straight ventral margin; hinge line without strong teeth (unlike Asian Clam); beak small and anterior

Shell Sculpture / Texture

Smooth with faint concentric growth lines; lacks sharp ridges or ribs

Color / Patterning

Shiny golden-brown to dark brown exterior; interior glossy purple-white nacre

Umbonal Position

Near anterior end; low and not protruding

Periostracum Condition

Thin, lustrous golden sheen when fresh; dulls with age or exposure

Soft Body Features

Pale tan foot; strong byssal threads from byssus gland for attachment (like marine mussels)

Habitat Type

Rivers, lakes, and canals with moderate to high flow; tolerates turbid and nutrient-rich water.

Substrate Preference

Attaches to hard and semi-hard substrates; rocks, docks, pipes, vegetation, shells, and other mussels

Depth Range

0–50 m; tolerant of high current velocity and low oxygen

Temperature Range

8–32 °C optimum; survives to 37 °C short-term; cannot survive freezing

Association / Behavior

Sessile; attached to rocks, vegetation, and even soft sediments via byssal threads. Tolerates high flow and colonizes artificial structures, shells, and other mussels.

Ecological Role / Impact

: Invasive — forms dense colonies (>100,000 m⁻²) that clog water infrastructure, outcompete native invertebrates, and alter nutrient and algal dynamics; filter feeder consuming phytoplankton and suspended detritus; high clearance rates alter nutrient cycling

Reproduction

Broadcast spawner; planktonic larvae (veligers) settle on hard surfaces; multiple spawning events per year

Growth Lines / Rings

Faint concentric growth lines; present but subtle; shell often glossy, so lines are less distinct unless viewed obliquely or under magnification.
