Available Volunteer Position Descriptions & Requirements
Litter Sorter : Help our team turn the litter we collect into valuable data. This opportunity will give you hands-on experience with peer reviewed litter categorization methods that help us better understand the litter accumulation that occurs below the surface.(Come get to know our team on a sorting day and it may just get you out on the water sooner!) No experience required.
Kayaker : If you are a confident kayaker we encourage you to apply for this role. The primary objective of this role is to follow divers, provide support in bringing litter to the surface and communicating with other recreators about the divers below the surface. You will also assist with bagging litter at the end of the dive and towing Darlene our beloved trash raft. Kayaking or SUP experience is required.
Snorkeler : Interested in getting a look at what the divers are doing below the surface while supporting the team? This role provides support for the freediver by helping keep track of dive buddies below the surface and communicating needs with other surface support members. Requirements: Must be a good swimmer; some snorkeling experience is preferred.
Freediver : Our ideal candidate for this role has experience freediving and may be AIDA or PADI apnea certified. This role assists with submerged litter removal, communication and overall surface support. Requirements: Must be a good swimmer and have experience freediving.
Boat Driver : Our boat drivers are instrumental to our operation. Primary tasks include helping load gear, safely operating the boat, assisting other volunteers, and ensuring other motorized watercraft keep their distance. The type of CUTL boat varies but generally is a 24-28’ open bow inboard engine. Requirements: Valid CA or NV boaters card & substantial experience driving boats, ideally in a work environment. **Must be willing and available for multiple volunteer days per season.
Jet Skier : The jet skier has a variety of tasks including towing volunteers short distances, ensuring other motorized watercraft keep their distance, occasionally towing our trash raft, shuttling volunteers to the shore, transporting gear, recording data on the CUTL phone, and a variety of other tasks. Requirements: Valid CA or NV boaters card & substantial experience driving jet skis, ideally in a work environment. **Must be willing and available for multiple volunteer days per season.
