Projects

At Clean Up the Lake 501(c)3, we lead both terrestrial and underwater cleanup efforts, collecting critical data to support scientific research and policy development while also running surveillance for aquatic invasive species and reporting observations on algal-blooms for future monitoring. Comprehensive assessments of completed projects are available below, offering detailed insights into our ongoing environmental impact and often providing recommendations for next steps for submerged litter management and aquatic invasive species management.

Project Goals

RESEARCH DIVE CONCLUSIONS

Significant litter issues were seen under the surface in the 0-25 foot zone. Comparisons of recreational litter were seen from areas such as Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe. We concluded CUTL’s approach to circumnavigated lake clean ups would be effective here.

7 MILE SCUBA CLEAN UP OF FALLEN LEAF LAKE

Fallen Leaf Lake is a mountain lake located in El Dorado County, California, near the California–Nevada state border, about one mile southwest of Lake Tahoe at an elevation of 6,377 feet, with about a 7 mile circumference. Clean Up The Lake’s dive team began its circumnavigated clean up in Summer 2022; removing all litter items from 0-50 pounds that were found in our path of 0-25 feet. Our teams collected data discussed below in the Environmental Survey portion of our clean up.

ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEY

Our non profit performed our standard of Clean Up The Lake’s environmental survey which included GPS & photographic documentation of: heavy lift litter items needed to be removed/salvaged, hot spots for litter accumulation, unknown or potentially historic items to report to the state, invasive species presence, algal bloom development.
