Projects

At Clean Up the Lake 501(c)3, we lead both terrestrial and underwater cleanup efforts, collecting critical data to support scientific research and policy development while also running surveillance for aquatic invasive species and reporting observations on algal-blooms for future monitoring. Comprehensive assessments of completed projects are available below, offering detailed insights into our ongoing environmental impact and often providing recommendations for next steps for submerged litter management and aquatic invasive species management.

Virginia Lakes Cleanup

Project Goals

Our team recently launched pilot research in the Virginia Lakes area, including Big Virginia Lake, Little Virginia Lake, and Trumbull Lake, to assess submerged litter and the presence of aquatic invasive species. Through a series of dive surveys, we collected and categorized litter by material type and use, identified heavy-lift debris and hotspot zones, and documented unknown or historical objects. We also assessed underwater plant life and submitted samples to the California Department of Agriculture to help identify potential invasive threats. This foundational work lays the groundwork for ongoing monitoring and ecosystem protection in the region.
