Projects

At Clean Up the Lake 501(c)3, we lead both terrestrial and underwater cleanup efforts, collecting critical data to support scientific research and policy development while also running surveillance for aquatic invasive species and reporting observations on algal-blooms for future monitoring. Comprehensive assessments of completed projects are available below, offering detailed insights into our ongoing environmental impact and often providing recommendations for next steps for submerged litter management and aquatic invasive species management.

Project Goals

In a partnership with Travel North Tahoe NV (TNTNV), Clean Up The Lake (CUTL) teamed up to help engage the community to explore the beautiful lakes of the Tahoe basin in a fashion more tailored to stewardship. Clean Up The Lake has run its pilot programs all over the Truckee-Tahoe area and as far as the Eastern Sierra, Washington, Arizona and Minnesota and is now taking the research to Marlette Lake. Marlette Lake sees a variety of fisherman, mountain bikers and hikers that pass by. While there is less traffic than other lakes, this is an important drinking water source for Carson City and nearby areas and therefore an important candidate for pilot research. CUTL & TNTNV engaged volunteers to join them in mid October 2024 before the winter hit to hike, bike or walk in to Marlette Lake and spend two days with SCUBA divers, snorkelers and kayakers where they explored the litter, aquatic invasive species and algal bloom issues going on under the surface of Marlette Lake.

Project Year: 2023

We continued cleaning the lake’s remaining circumference while performing AIS and algal bloom surveys, and used UNEP's Marine Litter Categorization system adjusted for freshwater to analyze data.
